About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China over 3,000 years ago, it has gained popularity over the past two decades and is now practiced by thousands of healthcare practitioners.
Acupuncture is a system of health care based upon traditional Oriental medical concepts that employs Oriental methods of diagnosis, treatment and adjuctive therapies for the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health and the prevention of disease.
Acupuncture uses hair-thin needles placed at specific points along our body.
Traditional Chinese theory explains it as a technique that balances the flow of energy through pathways on our body called meridians.
Western practitioners view specific points as places that stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, thereby promoting a positive physiologic change in our body.
The World Health Organization has listed over 4 dozen different conditions that can be successfully treated by acupuncture and research continues to help grow that list. The most common conditions treated with acupuncture are : pain management, muscle pains, headaches/migraines, asthma, sinus issues, immune disorders, dermatology conditions, addiction issues, stress, insomnia, GI disorders, gynecological and obstetric problems. This is just a sample of conditions that acupuncture has been successful in treating .
Patients of any age can receive acupuncture treatments, and most acupuncturists use needleuse techniques for young children.
Not everyone is a candidate for acupuncture. Bleeding disorders may increase your risk of complications, additionally, patients with infectious skin disorders are not candidates for acupuncture. Some types of acupuncture involve using mild electrical impulses which could interfere with a pacemaker.
