Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is pain, stiffness and reduced range of movement in your shoulder. This condition can interfere with daily life as patients suffer to perform basic movements. The tissue surrounding the joint stiffens, resulting in the formation of scar tissue, which in turn makes shoulder movement difficult and painful. However, chiropractic adjustments for frozen shoulder can help.

Frozen Shoulder Diagnosis and Treatment

A frozen shoulder should first be diagnosed by a doctor. During examination, the doctor will test the shoulder’s range of movement. Limited movement of the shoulder, an X-ray, as well as any underlying diseases the patient may have will help the doctor make the diagnosis of frozen shoulder. It is important to note that conditions such as arthritis can mimic frozen shoulder symptoms such as stiffness, swelling, pain and limited movement.

Aggressive treatment of frozen shoulder is necessary so that the condition does not become permanent. Treatment involves an aggressive combination of the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication. In most cases the patient will receive cortisone injections into the shoulder.
  • Physical therapy. Consistent physiotherapy is a crucial part of the treatment and recovery process. It can include stretching, range-of-motion exercises, electrical stimulation, lots of ice packs to help reduce inflammation, and strengthening exercises. Depending on the severity of the frozen shoulder, treatment can take weeks or months before recovery.
During treatment, patients are advised to avoid sudden movements or lifting of heavy objects so that they do not re-injure the shoulder.

If anti-inflammatory medication and physiotherapy do not work to treat frozen shoulder symptoms, patients may be eligible for surgery. During surgery, scar tissue will be released under anesthesia. However, this should be a last resort. Continued mobility exercises are the key element of treatment of frozen shoulder symptoms.

Prevention of Frozen Shoulder Symptoms

The best thing to do is avoid injuring your shoulder, particularly if you have underlying diseases such as diabetes or conditions such as arthritis. Too much heavy lifting can also be a risk factor for this condition, so be sure to pace yourself when working and know your limits.
