Sleep patterns can be disrupted from a variety of ailments, physical conditions and other neurological issues. Therapy such as dry needling or deep tissue massage can help the affected nerves, but afflictions such migraines may require additional therapy.

What Are Migraines?

Migraines are defined as throbbing and recurrent headaches that usually only affect one side of the head. They are often accompanied by other symptoms, such as disturbed vision, sensitivity to light and nausea. A migraine can last for up to 72 hours. It is estimated that 15 percent of the global population suffers from migraines.

The Link Between Sleep Patterns and Migraines

There are a number of factors that can put you at risk for developing migraines. One of those factors is your sleep patterns. A lack of sleep can cause you to develop migraines. A team of researchers at the University of Missouri found that sleep deprivation causes changes in the proteins that trigger and suppress chronic pain.

Sleep deprivation can also raise P2X3 protein in the body. This is a protein that initiates chronic pain. Furthermore, the researchers found that a lack of sleep increases the expression of the PKA and P38 proteins. These proteins regulate the sensory response in the trigeminal nerves, which can play a role in migraine development.

On the other hand, sleeping too much can also trigger migraines. Researchers have found that sleeping too much can alter certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin. Additionally, if you sleep too much during the day and change your sleep patterns at night, then this can lead to migraines.

Treating and Preventing Migraines

One of the best things you can do in order to prevent migraines is to get the proper amount of sleep. You should get between seven and eight hours of sleep. Sleeping more than eight hours can lead to migraines and other health problems.

You may also want to see a chiropractor if you are suffering from frequent migraines. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are very effective for treating migraines. Many people have reported immediate relief from migraine headaches after getting an adjustment. In fact, some studies suggest that chiropractic adjustments are more effective for alleviating migraines than pain medications. Furthermore, chiropractic adjustments have fewer side effects than pain medications.
